Bradley Adventure's profile

Shiprock - Tsé Bitʼaʼí

Most of my projects are a combination of the photography and the adventure of going there.  This photo was the culmination of many miles traveling, many hours spent waiting and watching the light at this location and the patience and calm it takes to acquire the trust of wild horses.

The skies began as solid blue.  Beautiful, but hardly dramatic enough for what I saw in my mind.  8 hours later, as the sun began to set, these could blew into position.  A small herd of horses that found me frightening several hours earlier, decided that I was no longer a threat.  Once this trust came about, the horses walked within 10 feet of my Rover, and then within 100 feet of me.  As the clouds became more wonderful and the sun began to set, the horses walked from one  the main mountain structure to the other end of the volcanic dyke.

Sometimes things do not work out this way.  But, the one time it does make the multiple previous failures well worth it.  The size of the final images is 150 inches by 30 inches.  The square image shows the detail of where the horses were during this series of images.
